DERBY MUSEUMS APPOINT SPELLER METCALFE TO BUILD THEIR £16.4M MUSEUM OF MAKING

The new museum will be built at Derby's iconic Silk Mill, which will be redeveloped in order to tell the story of Derby's rich industrial heritage.

Set to be located in what is considered to be the world’s first fully mechanised factory, the new ‘Museum of Making’ will feature items from Derby’s rich industrial past and will focus on inspiring the minds of the future through learning activities and workshops.

Speller Metcalfe’s Managing Director, Des O’Neill, said: "We are very excited to be working with Derby Museums on the redevelopment of Derby Silk Mill.”

"Having been main contractor on the UK’s first IPI project at Dudley College we have seen first-hand the benefits of the model and appreciate how rewarding and beneficial it is to work with a client that is committed to engaging and working collaboratively with their project team from inception to completion."

Works on the redevelopment are set to begin this year, with its future inauguration penciled in for the Mill’s 300-year anniversary in 2020.
